54°F 8:30AM
Heading to Whitehorse the capital of the Yukon Territory.
By 9AM we spotted our first of several brown bears walking along the highway. Again young bears. At 19:30 we reached Whitehorse and decided to change routes from the Alaskan Highway (Rt1) to Rt2 and headed to Dawaon City, the location of the Klondike gold rush. What we didn't know was the road is being redone SO we're on gravel roads for about 70 miles with a top speed of 45 mph and no passing. In each active work area we had to be led by a pilot car. The temp rose to 86°F and got hotter as the day progressed.
About 30 miles south of Dawson City we spotted a forest fire in the distance and the air started filling up with smoke.
We stayed at the Goldrush RV Park for the night. We actually got the last site and the trailers were packed in like sardines.
Had dinner at the El Dorado Hotel and were the last people seated. Drove around the town wondering why all the excitement about this place and decided to take advantage of the extended daylight ( sunset 11:30PM and Sunrise 2:30AM).and visit the historic Dredge #4. It was the second largest dredge in North America. A 3 story monster making Tony Beatte's dredge of the TV show Gold Rush look like a Tonka toy.
Tomorrow we continue north over the Top of the World Highway to Alaska...
